New terminal for Mexico City

The $400m project will raise capacity at the Mexican capital to 32m

The Mexican government is to invest $400m in a second terminal at Mexico City International airport. Construction work at the new terminal, to be located on the south side of the airport's runways, will begin in August and the facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2006. The new terminal will be connected to the existing building by a shuttle train.

Last year 23m passengers used Mexico City airport, and the new terminal will raise capacity to 32m. Expansion work at the existing terminal is expected to be complete by September.

The new project replaces a more ambitious plan to relocate the airport to a new location outside the city boundary, which was abandoned following protests by landowners and farm workers.

The main duty-free retailers at Mexico City are Dufry Group and Operadora de AeroBoutiques.
