Zainab Duty Free takes exclusive duty-free rights at Islamabad and Peshawar airports

Zainab Duty Free has been awarded contracts to operate duty-free retail outlets at Islamabad and Peshawar airports in Pakistan, DFNI Asia can reveal. The UK company was the highest bidder and only non-Pakistani party to take part in the process, and director Asad Shah said that he expected to open the Islamabad operation by the first week of July.

At both airports the company will be the sole duty-free retailer, operating one departures and one arrivals outlet and offering all duty-free categories except liquor. For the first time the Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan (CAAP) has awarded a five-year contract for the duty-free operations, having appointed previous incumbent Sugi International on a three-year basis.

"CAAP appointed us not only because we are the highest bidder," said Shah, "but also because they wanted an international company to come in and improve the shops. We see big potential in the market, particularly at Islamabad, which serves just under 1m passengers each month. At Peshawar the airport is having to turn down airlines wanting to fly there because it is too small, but it will probably be expanded soon."

Shah said that the company would examine other airport duty-free contracts in the country as they come up for tender.
