Aer Rianta International, the overseas arm of Aer Rianta, could come under the joint management of separate Dublin and Shannon airport boards under new proposals to break up the group
Aer Rianta International, the overseas arm of Irish airports group Aer Rianta, could come under the joint management of separate Dublin and Shannon airport boards under new proposals to break up the group, according to Irish media reports. Government is reviewing the new plans after its original breakup proposals ran into a number of potential legal obstacles. The plans, announced in mid-2003, also face fervent opposition from unions.Minister for Transport Seamus Brennan had previously suggested that ARI come under the supervision of the new Shannon board, but following a report from consultant PriceWaterhouseCoopers, ARI's duty-free businesses could be jointly overseen by Dublin and Shannon, with the international arm paying a dividend to the group. The report also suggests that the airport management business of Aer Rianta, which holds stakes in Birmingham, Hamburg and Dusseldorf airports, be held by the Dublin authority.
The report further proposes that the new Dublin Airport Authority help fund Cork airport's new Eu60m terminal, scheduled to open in 2005.
