Dubai Duty Free's cash tills were ringing on 21 February when the company recorded new daily record sales of Dh4.3m ($1.2m) representing over 29,000 transactions. The announcement comes one year after the previous record of Dh3.68m ($1m) reached on 2 March 2001.

Dubai Duty Free managing director, Colm McLoughlin, commented: "The new record was set at the beginning of Eid Al Adha  and it is a great indicator for the first quarter of 2002.  An analysis of the sales figures on the day shows an increase in luxury food and gift items and reflect the purchasing trends of passengers visiting overseas during the Eid holidays."

The biggest sales on the day were found in Dubai Duty Free's two FoodPlus outlets with delicatessen items registering $118,000 followed by confectionery which reached a daily record $116,000. Fragrances accounted for a further $111,000 and Dubai's traditional top category Gold, achieved sales of $110,000.

"We are delighted with the new daily record and are determined to keep on track to reach our annual sales target of Dh1bn in 2002," added McLoughlin. Dubai Duty Free ended 2001 with annual record sales of Dh888m ($244m).
