Jamaica's main international gateway opens its new concourse and shopping area despite hurricane
Sangster International airport's new concourse and shopping area opened on December 7, with most outlets opening on schedule despite disruption caused by a severe hurricane season. The new area features a beauty store operated by Motta Internacional and two liquor and tobacco outlets run by the Blue Mountain Duty Free joint venture between Duty Free Air & Ship Supply and Franklin & Wilson Airport Concessions.
Airport management MBJ vice president commercial Mike Kandert told RavenFox.com that most of the outlets had opened on schedule, and only those that needed fittings to be shipped from Florida remained closed. "Some of the catering outlets have been delayed because of the hurricanes that have affected Florida," he said, "but generally the new concourse is looking good. We have a good mix of international and local brands and are finalising the art and advertising programmes in the new area."
Kandert added that the airport had experienced some minor disruption throughout the hurricane season, but had only closed for a day because of problems with flights to Florida. He stressed that the airport's commercial development had continued apace and said that the company was looking ahead to the next phase of development—the renovation and expansion of the old terminal and the development of its new main shopping area.
