Auckland airport has approved the next stage of expansion of the arrivals processing facilities at the international terminal. The development, which is set to substantially increase the landside arrivals concourse and is scheduled for completion in mid-2011, will include a wider range of speciality retail, food and beverage and foreign exchange outlets, as well as improved visitor information services. Capacity improvements to the arrivals and border agency processing area of the international terminal are under way and scheduled for completion in June 2008, and involve a greatly enlarged and improved arrivals duty-free retail offer.
Auckland airport CEO Don Huse said: Once complete, international visitors and returning New Zealanders will enjoy great improvements when arriving at Auckland airport. Bringing the project ahead by 18 months means it will be completed in mid-2011 in time for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. The airports strategy is to greatly improve the passenger experience as part of its commitment to New Zealand tourism. This development is essential to enhancing Auckland airports performance during the next few years.
The new development stage is expected to cost about NZ$180m ($138.9m) primarily spread over three years. According to the airport, it covers core terminal development and creates extensive opportunities for much enhanced retail and commercial services.
