New border store planned in eastern Russia

9-Jan-2003

Russian Customs have issued a licence for a new duty-free store on the Russia-China border at Blagoveshchensk, 800km north-west of Vladivostok

The operator, Russian company Hairex, is in discussions with international retailers to form a partnership to run the operation.

TRW understands that Gebr Heinemann has entered discussions with Hairex, but no commitment has been made as yet. The new store is expected to open in spring, as more travellers emerge after the winter season.

Tobacco, fragrances and electronics will be available at the store, with all goods imported from China. The shop will cater only for travellers entering China, with other travellers able to shop at the outlet on the Chinese side of the border.
