The German airport is to open a big new shopping centre to capitalise on rapid growth in retail revenue
Munich airport is discussing plans for a new landside shopping centre to open in 2009. The last shops in the existing landside area opened in July 2003, and vice-president real estate Rainer Beeck told RavenFox.com that the airport is carrying out an analysis of the market to determine the needs of the new facility."The landside area accounts for 35% of our retail revenues today," he said, "and we hope to build on that by attracting more non-passengers, particularly airport employees and people from the rural area around the airport. At this stage we have no firm plans but the building is likely to be at least a 35,000sq ft [3,250sq m] extension to the current landside centre."
Retail revenue at Munich has grown by 35% in three years and has doubled in the past seven, said Beeck. The growth has been fuelled by new space landside and in terminal two, jointly operated by the airport and Lufthansa, which uses Munich as an alternative hub to its Frankfurt base.
