Miles for Smiles 2009 raises over $60,000

This year’s charity fun run attracted more than 80 members of the travel-retail industry to take part in benefit of The Smile Train

The 2009 edition of the Miles for Smiles charity fun run attracted more than 80 members of the travel-retail industry and a further 20 members of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel sports club on November 21. The race also raised over $60,000 for cleft palate charity The Smile Train, with the total set to increase as donations are still being received.

Travel-retail took the top three places in the men’s 10k run, which was won by Karl Marnane of Butlers Irish Chocolates. The fastest 10k run woman was Jumeirah Beach Hotel club runner Aline Raywood, with P&G’s Laura Exley coming second and topping the travel-retail leaderboard.

The 5k men’s run was won by Dubai Airport’s Eugene, while the women’s section was another saw Diageo’s Jane Ewing, Adrienn Csengeri and Emma White taking the top three. In the 5k walk, Imail Rifi of Airline Retail Partners took the men’s prize and club member Renate Wereney won the women’s event. TFWA’s Michael Barrett, who dressed up as Spiderman (pictured right), won the best men’s fancy dress while Scorpio’s Jill McGuire was crowned the best fancy-dressed lady in a Cleopatra costume.

The event was sponsored by Estée Lauder Companies Travel Retailing Worldwide, Patrón Spirits International AG, The Chalhoub Group, Bahrain Duty Free and ProLab Digital. All participants also received goodie bags provided by MCM with gifts from Estée Lauder, Air Retail Partners, Clarins, Hugo Boss, Scorpio and Wizz. Mars was also at hand to provide ice creams for the runners on the day.
