The Swiss agent appoints Indian distributor Midas International to distribute its portfolio of sunglasses, accessories and watches to the Indian sub-continent's duty-free markets

Indian distributor Midas International has signed an agreement with Niclas to represent the Swiss agency's brands on the Indian and sub-continental duty-free markets. The agreement, which came into effect last week, will cover sunglasses, watches and accessories from brands Cat, Wenger, Camel Active and Axcent of Scandinavia.

The deal grants Midas exclusive distribution rights to Niclas' brands on the Indian sub-continent, with the potential of extending the agreement to the region's domestic markets at a later stage. Midas managing director Nirmal Chowdhury told DFNI Asia that the deal symbolized the strong belief in India's duty-free market.

"These are very exciting times in Indian duty-free, with the market set to develop very rapidly over the next few years," said Chowdhury. "There is great potential for Niclas' catalogue of brands in India and in the wider region."

Midas also distributes Gallaher cigarette brand to the region's duty-free markets, having brought the brands back to Indian sub-continental travel-retail for the first time since the 1970s last April. Chowdhury reported that sales were developing steadily, particularly for the UK tobacco supplier's premium brand Sobranie.
