Miami International airport’s development programme will focus on post-security “in-line” stores

Miami International airport (MIA) has revealed it will focus on mall-style, post-security stores as part of its renovations programme.

Miami International airport commercial operations manager Patricia Ryan told Ravenfox.com: “MIA is constrained by narrow concourses which do not provide for in-line stores.  We are working with our concessionaires to identify opportunities and we are planning two new food locations for the new expanded D Concourse to accommodate passengers.”

Miami has opened 17 stores in the central terminal, and is in negotiations for the one remaining lot to be leased. It recently awarded contracts for 26 new retail locations and the proposal for the final bookstore/café will be presented to the board of County Commissioners in the next few months when advertising approval will be requested.

Miami will now focus on opening all 45 new locations in the new south terminal, which is scheduled to open in September. The opening of the south terminal will change the dynamics of the airport as it will accommodate 22 airlines, most of which will switch from the central terminal. The central terminal will then accommodate 22 airlines from concourse A.
