The £50m overhaul of the airport’s flagship terminal is part of an £80m investment across its three terminals
Manchester airport has unveiled its new-look flagship terminal one, which has undergone a £50m ($82m) overhaul in the past two years. The overhaul is part of an £80m ($131m) investment across the airport’s three terminals with the creation of new airside shopping and catering facilities and a redesigned flow to make the journey of passengers around the airport easier. The scheme follows a study into passengers’ state of mind as they travelled through the airport, conducted on behalf of the airport .Retailers have spent almost £15m ($25m) on fit out creating 52 units. New stores include Kurt Geiger, Fat Face, Mango, Dixons, Starbucks, SoHo Coffee House and Monsoon all of which complimenting the existing offer from Biza and Attitude which were launched last year. A new “Be Relax” spa service is also available offering a range of beauty treatments and passengers can make the most of a dedicated VIP enclosure outside the terminal. A new Emirates lounge will also be added to the terminal in preparation for Airbus A380 flights which are expected to begin operating from the airport within the next two years.
Manchester airport managing director Andrew Cornish said: “Our terminal redesigns have had to withstand the test of time with the liquid ban and the terrorist attack of Glasgow airport meaning we had to take them back to the drawing board several times, always putting our customers safety and security at the forefront of our designs. With the work now finished in T1 and T2 set to follow shortly after, the future looks bright. We’ve seen retail growth outstrip the high-street over recent years and many of our passengers have enjoyed the offering here at Manchester previously but we wanted to significantly invest in it. We will now wait to see if these changes have an effect.”
