Malaysia Airports to expand retail at KLIA

22-Aug-2006

Malaysia Airports senior general manager Azmi Murad has told the New Straits Times that Kuala Lumpur International Airport will increase the number of duty free shops to 88 from the 23 operating at present

Speaking to reporters after a Malaysia Airports briefing Murad said: "We are ready to consider applications for any business operations at the airport, including that of duty-free shops."

In July, Malaysia Airports managing director Dato Seri Bashir told delegates to the Raven Fox Travel Retail Summit that the airport intended to increase retail revenues to at least 50% of the airport's total income. The airport authority has appointed Pragma Consulting to examine ways of optimising available space.

"Aeronautical revenues are very low, with landing and parking fees unchanged since 1982. The government is reluctant to raise the fees so it is vital that we increase commercial revenues, which account for only 35% of total income," he said.
