The state-controlled airport authority seeks to expand its international airport management portfolio

Malaysia Airports has revealed that it is in talks to manage airports in the Middle East. The company, which is already present in India as a member of consortiums managing Hyderabad and Delhi airports, said the move is part of a government push for international expansion, and that it hopes talks will be concluded by the end of the year.

Managing director Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid told reporters: "We are already in two airports overseas and we are in discussions with a few more airports in the Middle East. In all those discussions we should reach a decision by the end of this year."

Meanwhile the company is seeking to restructure about M$860m ($235m) of debt that it owes the government in concession fees covering the country's 39 airports. The company is hoping to raise airport taxes, although it could also hand over the Sepang Formula One motor racing circuit, valued at M$400m ($109.4m), as part of the settlement.
