London City airport has revealed that its departure lounge expansion project, due to open in early May, will include an enhanced retail offer. The new airside layout will include a WH Smith convenience store and a duty-free shop operated by The Nuance Group, and will incorporate about 250 additional seats, complimentary wireless internet access and a new concept bar, scheduled to open at the end of May.
The project, which began in June 2007, also includes new aircraft parking stands, gate lounges and self-service check-in kiosks. According to the airport, the completion of the current expansion project is the largest construction work undertaken at London City since it was built in 1987.
London City airport CEO Richard Gooding said: “Our contribution to London’s infrastructure is vital if it is to maintain its role as a leading world city. Growth at the airport is largely due to our convenient location on the doorstep of Canary Wharf and the City of London. Frequent fliers demand a premier service and our proven record of transferring passengers to their destinations with ease and speed has ensured their continued loyalty. London City airport has grown in leaps and bounds since it opened in 1987 and the future is even more encouraging as more and more passengers travel from our East London hub.”
