A range of promotions and activities, including the appearance of "little green men" and the Middle East's first solar-powered vehicle marked the start of Environment Week at Dubai airport, which ends on Friday. The initiative, which aims to raise environmental awareness, is the third such environmental event organised by Dubai's Department of Civil Aviation.

For the younger travellers, the promotion offers them the chance to learn about the environment from the "green men" who hand out stickers, leaflets and entry forms for a competition. The green men are being accompanied by two costume creatures, a hammerhead shark and a green turtle which represent two of the region's endangered species. The Garsight Skycart II aircraft refuelling vehicle, powered by solar panels, has also been undergoing tests at the airport.

Dubai Duty Free managing director, Colm McLoughlin, commented: "It is very important that this week-long programme appeals to young travellers and provides them with a genuine interest in the environment. By focusing on local environment issues, we believe the campaign has more of an impact."
