Latest airport statistics: Asia/Pacific leads again
Latest airport traffic statistics published by Airports Council International (ACI) show that Asia/Pacific has risen back to the top of the growth table. October 2000 results from 650 airports show global passenger traffic rising 4%, with aircraft movements down 1% compared with October 1999. For January to October 2000, passenger traffic was up 6% and movements up 1%.
In October 2000, passenger traffic rose in all regions. Growth was highest in Asia/Pacific at 7%, followed closely by Europe (+6%), the Middle East and Africa (both +4%), North America (+2%) and Latin America/Caribbean (+1%).
Madrid's Barajas airport posted the fastest passenger growth among the top 30 airports worldwide with an increase of 17%, mainly due to its new runway. Other fast-growing airports were Rome Fiumicino with 9% growth plus Singapore Changi and Hong Kong which both reported 8% growth. Traffic marginally declined at several major US airports such as Miami, Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare and Detroit, primarily due to reduced air service frequencies.
