The country will implement the security standards recommended by the ICAO on January 1
Kuwaits Directorate General for Civil Aviation will implement the security measures recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regarding liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) from January 1, according to the Arab Times newspaper. The report stated that passengers departing from Kuwait International airport would have to comply with international rules, which determine that containers carried in hand luggage should not exceed 100ml in capacity and should be placed in transparent bags provided by the airport authorities.
LAGs bought from duty-free stores at the airport or on board aircraft will be allowed through transit checkpoints as long as they are placed in appropriate sealed tamper-evident bags marked with the name of the company or airport of origin and clearly tagged with the purchase invoice, according to the report. The Directorate reserves the right to reconsider or apply stricter security measures regarding LAGs, including the sale of such items inflight or at duty-free outlets.
The LAGs issue was one of the main discussion points at the Middle East Duty Free Association conference last week, where European Travel Retail Council president Frank OConnell pointed out that all Gulf states are eligible for EU recognition of LAGs purchases as long as they have adopted ICAO rules, but only Dubai has applied so far. Kuwaits decision could pave the way for the country to be one of the next to apply for recognition.
