Beirut Duty Free reported June sales up 52% on the same month last year on the back of a 10% passenger increase. General manager Gerry Crawford said that sales were particularly strong in the fragrances and cosmetics sector, up 56% for the month, while cigars, electronics and confectionery all achieved "above average" results. Departures business registered a 48% sales increase while arrivals shops took 71% more than June 2002.
Said Crawford: "June was excellent and really demonstrates the value of the new retail complex. It has been a very difficult few months with passengers down by 50% at its worst period. The strong arrivals performance is an excellent indication as Gulf Co-operation Council tourists are arriving now and we will see very strong results in July and August. The hotels are completely booked out and our information is that flights are heavily booked."
