The Australian company strengthens its representation in Israel, competing with the Sakal Group for ships, crews and passengers at the rapidly-growing port

James Richardson has secured a contract to supply ships, passengers and ship crews at Ashdod port in Israel with duty-free goods. The company will compete for custom with the Sakal Group, which has held the monopoly at the port for several years.

The 750sq m (8,070sq ft) warehouse will offer traditional duty-free goods to crew and passengers, and ship supplies for the vessels themselves. James Richardson duty-free division chairman Garry Stock told RavenFox.com that while the contract is not its biggest, it is strategically important.

"We are pleased to have representation in a place where we previously didn't," said Stock. "We are looking forward to sharing the business with Sakal and to serving customers who enjoy shopping with James Richardson."

Ashdod port has competed with Haifa, where James Richardson also competes with Sakal, since the two ports were privatised recently, and is expecting strong passenger growth over the next few years. The product ranges and pricing at both retailers' warehouses will be similar, meaning that establishing a reputation for good customer service and forming strong contacts among ship crews will be essential if the operators are to compete successfully.
