James Richardson adds sports to Tel Aviv portfolio

4-Feb-2004

In partnership with sportswear importer MGS International, operator James Richardson has won the contract to operate two sports stores at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion airport's new terminal three. Israel Airports Authority (IAA) director commerce and properties Yoram Shapira confirmed that the partnership secured the six-year contract with a joint bid of $6.38m per year.

The tender concerned two stores, one airside and one landside, covering 800sq m (8,608sq ft) in total. IAA has retained an option to extend the contract for a further two years.

According to Israeli press reports, the winning bid beat off competition from Sakal Bros and Mega Sport, who tabled a joint bid worth $3.78m per year. Sakal Bros is the operator at Tel Aviv's other sports outlets.

The win gives James Richardson a strong position at Tel Aviv's new facility, where it was recently awarded the main seven-year duty-free concession. Sakal Bros won the contract to operate electronics at the new terminal.
