JTI sales up 79% in Q1 2008

The world’s third largest tobacco manufacturer has benefited from its Gallaher takeover in 2007

Japan Tobacco International (JTI) announced increased sales of 79% in the quarter ended March 31. Combined with the Gallaher business, JTI’s total sales volume rose to 103.9bn cigarettes compared to the same period last year.

Global Flagship Brand sales volume increased 56.6% to 55.6bn units driven by the strong performance of Winston in Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Spain, Turkey and Italy, Camel in Italy, Spain and Russia and Mild Seven in Korea, Taiwan and Russia. Net sales including tax increased 176% to $6.3bn. Net sales excluding tax rose 95% from the previous year to $2.4bn.
