Hughes & Hughes has reported that it will shortly be named preferred bidder for the exclusive books concession at London Heathrow airport's new terminal
Irish bookseller Hughes & Hughes has become the first retailer to announce its participation at London Heathrow airport terminal five, saying it has been named as preferred bidder for the exclusive contract to operate bookstores at the facility, due to open in 2008. The company valued the five-year contract at Eu70m ($88.6m) and anticipated it would generate sales of Eu14m ($17.7m) annually.Hughes & Hughes told the Irish Times that it expected to be announced as preferred bidder for the contract within days. The agreement would cover two outlets totaling 5,000sq ft (465sq m) and would guarantee the winner exclusivity in the books category, with the exception of small selections offered at news outlets.
Hughes & Hughes runs a chain of 20 stores, including outlets at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports. It also operates an outlet at London City airport.
Shop fitting at the new terminal is scheduled to begin next March.
