Hughes & Hughes has invested €1.5m in the two outlets

Irish book retailer Hughes & Hughes has opened two outlets at the new London Heathrow airport terminal five, which opened at the end of March.

The retailer has invested €1.5m ($2.4m) in the stores, which cover a combined retail space of 4,000sq ft (370sq m), and agreed a five-year contract with BAA following a four-month tender and consultation process. A total of 60 staff are employed at the stores, which feature the latest in bookstore design and technology. Combined sales are expected to reach €70m ($110m) over the five-year term of the contract.

Hughes & Hughes CEO Derek Hughes said: “Securing the T5 contract was a coup for the company. There is a real ‘who’s who’ of international retail represented in T5, so it is very important for us.” Hughes added: “There was strong international competition from global retailers and we were up against operators such as Borders and WH Smith. It was great to come out ahead.”

Hughes & Hughes, which also operates outlets at London City, Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports, hopes to feature in other airports in the future.

“Coming through the process for T5 shows that we can compete on an international scale,” said Hughes. “Over the next few years we plan to move into other international airports.”
