Belgian beer company Interbrew yesterday won a legal victory against the UK government?s decision to force it to sell brewer Bass, which it acquired last August.

A UK High Court ruled that the Competition Commission had acted unfairly when it forced the sale of Bass. The parties will meet again tomorrow in court to discuss a way forward. It is likely that Interbrew will still have to sell part of the Bass portfolio to meet monopoly requirements.Interbrew said: "We are writing history here. It?s the first time that a UK merger decision has been quashed by the High Court."
