Argentinian duty-free operator InterBaires claims its new store will revolutionise the destination products sector

Argentinian duty-free operator InterBaires is to create a 1,100sq m (11,800sq ft) store at Buenos Aires Ezeiza airport offering a full range of local products across all categories. The initiative follows research carried out by the operator to discover consumer needs at the location, and InterBaires ceo Enrique Urioste said the store will "revolutionise the whole destination products sector".

Among the items the store will offer are fashion, indigenous arts and crafts, leathergoods, wines, fine food and local music. "We want to sell something more than a destination T-shirt, and to give travellers exactly what they want," said Urioste. "We hope to have our destination product megastore up and running by the beginning of June. Once the store is finished, the shopping experience for people going through the terminal will be very different from that at other airports."

Urioste said that InterBaires' turnover for 2003 was slightly ahead of budget at $49.8m, and he hoped to reach sales of $70m this year. Other new developments at Ezeiza this year include a doubling of retail space in the Aerolineas Argentinas terminal plus renovation work at InterBaires' arrivals store.

Enrique Urioste is featured in The DFNI Interview in the March 1 issue, out next week.
