Industry Database & Directory moves with the times

6-Aug-2002

This year's edition of The Duty-Free & Travel-Retail Database & Directory, featuring the latest essential data on the world's travel-retail industry is due out later this month

Database & Directory editor Sandra Newman said "We have made a number of improvements this year, including several new features that make it easier for readers to pinpoint the hottest locations and brands in duty-free, and to analyse sales and travel trends."

There are now three main topics within the Database section of the yearbook:

  • World Market Analysis
  • Leading Operators
  • Database on Location

These are followed by the Directory section, which provides up-to-date contact details for duty-free operators, suppliers, agents and distributors, consultants and trade associations.

The World Market Analysis section features a detailed review of the business in 2001, including exclusive data in collaboration with Generation of Sweden. Despite global duty-free sales falling by 5% to $19bn in 2001 there is still cause for optimism in the industry. Merger and acquisition activity has not slowed despite the recent contraction in travel and duty-free sales and several important airport concession contracts were awarded in the year. Airport developments and the supply of airport retail space also show no sign of slowing and airports were left relatively unscathed last year with global sales down just 0.7%.

Of the leading duty-free markets Canada, the US and Japan were the countries most badly affected by the travel downturn in 2001. Most product categories also suffered, but with confectioney and perfumery performing best last year.

New to the World Market Analysis section this year is an examination of sales trends for the past five years and a global round-up of travel-retail post-September 11.
