Bidders in the latest round of Airport Authority of India tenders tell DFNI Asia they are unsurprised that India Tourism Development Corp and Flemingo won all locations between them
There will be no new duty-free retailers in India for the time being following the Airports Authority of India's decision to split seven locations between market veterans India Tourism Development Corp (ITDC) and Flemingo International. ITDC was awarded two sites, at Bangalore and Goa airports, while Flemingo gained five sites, at Ahmadabad, Amritsar, Chennai, Hyderabad and Trivandrum.Sources involved in the tender process confirmed the result to DFNI Asia and said they were unsurprised with the outcome. All contracts were awarded to the highest bidders, and at all locations the incumbent operator gained extra space at airports in which they already operate.
One bidder said that, while hiscompany was "bitterly disappointed" not to have gained space, it would now focus on the "more important" bids at Hyderabad and Bangalore, both of which have new international terminals.
Another retailer added that he believed the winning bid at Goa was particularly high considering the seasonal nature of traffic at the airport.
Three airports – Calicut, Gaya and Kolkata – received no bids and will be retendered at a later date under revised terms.
