DFNIonline regrets to announce the death of industry pioneer – and Irish peacemaker – Brendan O’Regan, aged 90

Brendan O’Regan, the man who launched an industry when he opened the first airport duty-free shop at Shannon airport in 1947, died on February 2 at the age of 90.

Although O’Regan is known in the industry as one of the founders of the modern duty-free retail trade, his importance to the world beyond duty-free was greater still. He was a significant contributor to the Irish peace process, founding Cooperation Ireland in 1978 and the University of Limerick’s Irish Peace Institute in 1984.

Irish president Mary McAleese issued a statement expressing her sadness at O’Regan’s death, calling him “a true visionary who leaves a legacy that permeates all levels of economic, social and cultural life in Ireland."
