The Indian retailer looks beyond airports to increase its market share

India Development Tourism Corp is pursuing duty-free opportunities at railway stations and ports in an attempt to grow its business, according to a report in the Indian Economic Times. The company announced its ambitions as it forecast a 14% increase turnover for its total  business – including duty-free, hotels, tours and travel – for the financial year 2005-6, to Rs4bn ($90m).

The company is examining fresh opportunities on the recently re-opened rail links with Pakistan, and is set to open to stores at railway crossing points, at Munabao rail station in Rajasthan and a near the border at Wagah. The company will also open its first port store this year, at Mumbai port.

Duty-free retail accounts for 38% of ITDC's revenue, and the company has doubled its duty-free revenues in the past two years.
