The US retailer has won ten speciality contracts at Miami International airport
US retailer HMSHost has won ten speciality concessions at Miami International airport. The operator will open a Little Havana local crafts store, news and gifts store Miami News Connection, confectionery shop Sweet Factory, fashion concepts Tommy Bahama and Sporting Eyes and electronics store Palm One. The remaining wins are food and beverage contracts, including a Starbucks concession.
Other retailers awarded contracts are Navarro, which will open a convenience store, Miami International Airport Pharmacy, which will open a Bijoux Terner concept, and Air Sun JV from Ohio, which will open a Sunglass Hut. Gifts retailer Brookstone will operate its own store at the airport.
Miami airport commercial operations manager Patricia Ryan said that local firms had been encouraged to bid. "We went through the shopping centres and tried to get the word out to anyone interested," she said. "We softened the requirements as much as we could, and we did everything we could do to try and get local involvement and quality."
The concessions will run for eight years, with a two-year option to extend. The concessions awarded total 26,800sq ft (2,658sq m) of retail space. Of the 27 speciality concessions, the airport is expected to announce the remaining 13 winners soon. Bidders have allegedly contested two of the concession packages resulting in one package being withdrawn. The winner of this particular package will be announced in September.
