Havas-Bayindir win Izmir airport contract
The group is expected to invest about $152m over seven years in the construction of a new terminal at the Turkish airport
Havas-Bayindir Group has won the build-operate-transfer contract for the planned 110,000sq m (1.2msq ft) terminal at Izmir Adnan Menderes airport in Turkey. The operation period will be seven years and there is no further extension option.
The group will oversee the running of the 4,000sq m (43,000 sq ft) duty-free space, although it is not yet known whether this will be re-tendered to find an operator. The airport contract, issued by the State Airport Authority of Turkey, was given to Havas-Bayindir as it offered the most investment over the longest duration, although it bid lowest for the contract.
Construction and engineering firm Teknotes was among the six companies that were financially evaluated for the bid. It was originally seeking a duty-free operator to manage the space. It is estimated that the level of investment by Havas-Bayindir Group could be about Eu125m ($152m).
The construction of the new terminal will begin in December, with completion set for December 2006. It will have a capacity for 5m passengers a year. Izmir's existing terminal will handle only domestic flights after the new terminal opens. Germans were the leading nationality among the 1.3m international passengers at Izmir in 2003.
