Handheld computers to save Britannia $800,000

8-May-2003

A new inflight communication system will allow Britannia Airways cabin crew to access product information, stock levels and prices of duty-free goods, and could save the company £500,000 ($800,000) in procurement and support costs over four years

The system, which goes live today, comprises 1,800 personal digital assistants (PDA) that will enable staff to process credit card transactions and print receipts, as well as showing customers product information and film clips held on the devices.

Flight reports and sales information will be downloaded from the handheld Casio EG800s to back-office systems for analysis, and staff will also be able to access roster information and use email on the PDAs.
