The airport is to postpone its airside retail development project to allow for more improvements to be added to the schedule
Glasgow Prestwick International airport has told RavenFox.com that it is postponing its airside retail development until December. The £3m overhaul—originally due to be completed in April—has been moved back to "accommodate beneficial changes".
A spokesperson from the airport's commercial department told RavenFox.com that the schedules for changes to both landside and airside retail had been moved as a result of extra construction work required by updated plans. "The construction for the landside retail outlets will be finished this week and we will complete on the tenders for those in the next few weeks, which we expect to announce soon after," she said.
The expanded departures area will have more retail space than initially announced due to the addition of retail outlets nearer to the departure gates. This was not on the original master plan and should ensure added interest when the tenders go out for departures space, the spokesperson said. Previous retail manager Lorraine Belsey told RavenFox.com at the end of last year that the airside retail contracts were due to be issued at the beginning of the year.
WHSmith has been awarded the contract for the news, books and magazines concessions for the airport, with Travelex operating the bureau de change stands and Select Service Partner managing restaurants outlets.
The airport will continue to operate its own retail space—including the 300sq m duty-free shop—until the tender is awarded. The retail expansion includes extending the duty-free store to 500sq m. New outlets will be built for health and beauty products as well as for gifts.
