Traffic at German airports group Fraport's flagship location hit new heights in 2005, but problems at Antalya airport in Turkey forced the group's overall traffic figures down
Frankfurt International airport welcomed a record 52.2m passengers in 2005, an increase of 2.2% on the previous year, airports group Fraport has announced. In December international traffic generated growth of 1.5% at the airport, but across the year growth was driven mainly by European traffic.
Traffic to and from eastern European destinations climbed by 10%. Intercontinental traffic was boosted by strong numbers on board routes to the Middle East.
Of the other German airports in the Fraport group, Frankfurt Hahn enjoyed an increase in traffic of 11.9%, Hanover of 7.4% and Saarbrücken of 5.7%.
While traffic at Lima airport increased by 11.6% last year, Antalya airport registered a 59.2% decline. Earlier this year Fraport blamed the fall on disruption caused by the inauguration of a second passenger terminal at the airport, and has said that plans for the redistribution of traffic should result in higher passenger numbers this year (DFNI December 15 2005).
Overall, traffic at Fraport's six airports fell by 6.4% in 2005.
