Frankfurt posts third-quarter record

Airport group Fraport releases strong traffic figures for the first nine months of 2004, driven by passenger growth at Frankfurt International airport

Releasing its traffic results for September, Frankfurt airport revealed it had recorded its best ever third quarter for passenger traffic, airfreight tonnage and aircraft movements. Passenger numbers in September were up by 3.1% year-on-year, reaching 4.8m. Airport authority Fraport said that holiday traffic to southern Europe had picked up after a "relatively weak" August, although business travel on domestic and European routes was stagnant. Strong intercontinental traffic had ensured year-on-year growth, said the authority. Total traffic during the first nine months of the year at Frankfurt stood at 38.8m, up by 6.4% on 2003.

Traffic across Fraport Group's airport network was up by 5.5% in September compared with the previous year, totalling 7.7m. The strongest growth was posted at Antalya airport in Turkey, where traffic reached 1.58m, up by 12.9% on September 2003. At Lima in Peru, traffic growth stood at 9%; at low-cost hub Frankfurt Hahn numbers were up by 8.6% and Hannover airport recorded growth of 4%. At Fraport's regional airport Saabrücken, traffic was slightly down by 1.5% last month.
