Jordan prime minister Marouf Bakhit has laid the foundation stone for the new passenger terminal at Queen Alia International airport (QAIA). The $700m expansion plan will be carried out by Aéroports de Paris-led consortium Airport International Group, which won the 25-year concession to operate and maintain the airport and build the new facility in April. The new terminal will span 85,000sq m (914,932sq ft) and is scheduled to open in 2010, when it will increase the airport’s capacity from 3.5m to 9m passengers.

QAIA is Jordan’s main airport and accounts for 97% of the country’s air traffic. Spanish retailer Aldeasa operates the duty-free shops at the airport.
