BAA has appointed former Virgin Group board member Paul Griffiths to the role of deputy managing director and planning and development director of Gatwick Airport, effective from January 12 2004. Griffiths will take responsibility for the management of routes and networks for the airport, as well as overseeing Gatwick's expansion, ensuring that any developments have the support of the airport's shareholders, as well as local business and the community.
Gatwick Airport managing director Roger Cato said: ?Paul is joining Britain's second busiest airport, with some 30m passengers travelling through it each year. We have permission to grow Gatwick to around 40m passengers a year within the next decade and will be investing around £1bn ($600m) in improving and extending its facilities. Paul will help us meet the challenges that this substantial development programme will present. His extensive experience of the industry combined with his marketing and commercial expertise will be invaluable in achieving targets.?
Griffiths' experience encompasses Virgin's rail and travel group, including managing the re-launch of Virgin Trains West Coast, and a stint at Virgin Atlantic Airways.
