Florence airport to get new look

Florence airport is to be refurbished as part of a development to cater for an increase in passenger levels
Florence airport is embarking on a refurbishment programme to accommodate anticipated tourism growth. UK design agency Portland Design has been assigned to the project, which will cover the design of all public areas including new retail and duty-free space, catering outlets, architecture, graphics and signage.
Portland head of design developments Alan Thompson said: "The history of Florence has been an important driver in our approach to the refurbishment. The culture and vision of the city has always been forward thinking and we believe that the design approach must embrace this. A contemporary and innovative environment, which has unique values, will create a true welcome for arriving and departing passengers as well as for the meeters and greeters at the airport. The design will endorse the spirit of the region and help create a lasting memory of Florence."
Construction is scheduled for completion in spring 2006.
