Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation announces the names of the local companies that have pre-qualified for the country's first airport duty-free tender
Five local companies have pre-qualified for Saudi Arabia's first airport duty-free tender, the country's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has announced. They join seven international retailers whose interest in the tender was confirmed last week (click here for more details). The pre-qualified Saudi companies are Arabian Company for Power and Water Ltd (Acwapower); Omar Kassem Alesayi Group; El-Seif Commercial Investment Co; Dallah Group Co; and Al-Musbah Trading Group, which already operates several duty-paid retail and food and beverage outlets in the airports of Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam.
Under the terms of the tender, international bidders must form a partnership with a pre-qualified Saudi company to proceed to the request for proposals stage. Similarly, Saudi bidders will not be allowed to bid alone for the contract. Concession Planning International managing director Frank Gray, who is advising GACA on the tender, said that the timeframe allocated to the process may be adjusted to give pre-qualified companies more time to form partnerships.
"July and August is not the ideal time for a tender given that many people take holidays at that time," he acknowledged. "We certainly don't want to give the bidders inadequate time to prepare."
Gray said that GACA was "very pleased" with the quality and number of the pre-qualified companies.
