European traffic up by 6.9% in July

ACI Europe's latest figures show rapid growth among the region's smallest airports

Passenger numbers at European airports in July rose by 6.9% year on year, according to new figures from Airports Council International Europe.

Smaller airports recorded the most impressive growth. Those that handle fewer than 5m passengers a year enjoyed an average increase of 13.9% compared with July 2004. Of the smaller airports, Bournemouth performed best, welcoming 85.7% more passengers than it did last July. Traffic at Rome Ciampino rose by 85.4%, while Riga posted growth in passenger numbers of 73.7%.

Among the region's bigger airports, Madrid Barajas recorded growth in traffic of 10.6%, Munich was up by 8.3% and Paris Charles de Gaulle by 5.7%. Moscow Domodedovo enjoyed a rise in passenger numbers of 15.3%, Barcelona 12.7% and Athens 12.5%.
