The zone would promote the development of tourism, according to the Central Terengganu Development Agency

Duty-free products will be sold at Pengkalan Gawi in Tasik Kenyir if a proposal submitted by the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah) two months ago is approved by the Malaysian government.

Deputy finance minister Datuk Tengku Putera Tengku Awang said Ketengah hopes its proposal will be approved as the introduction of a duty-free zone would be a catalyst to tourism industry development in Tasik Kenyir.

If Tasik Kenyir is given duty-free status it will be the first duty-free zone in Terengganu province. Other duty-free zones in Malaysia are at Pulau, Langkawi, Pulau Tioman and Labuan.
