Duty-free tobacco gains reprieve in Australia

A proposal to ban duty-free sales of tobacco in Australia was removed from the budget announced this week, giving the beleaguered sector a temporary reprieve. The tobacco sector has been under siege in Australia, and operators such as The Nuance Group as well as airport authorities have been lobbying on behalf of the category in duty-free, and fought to keep tobacco off the budget agenda.

But a fresh threat is looming, in the proposal to restrict inbound tobacco allowances to Australia, and an announcement could be made by government shortly.
