The airline’s new CEO said duty-free sales helped to keep the company profitable despite core business losses

Duty-free sales on board SriLankan Airlines flights have helped to offset losses in its aeronautical operations, the carrier’s new CEO Manoj Gunawardena said in an interview with local newspaper The Island. He explained that while the core business suffered “marginal losses”, a good performance from duty-free, catering and ground handling ensured the group remained profitable.

Gunawardena added that SriLankan plans to increase the number of flights to popular destinations and that measures are being taken to avoid passing the costs of fuel price increases on to passengers.
