The operator is to further strengthen its presence at the airport once the terminal is redeveloped

Hamilton International airport has extended its contract with Duty Free Stores New Zealand, offering the retailer a nine-year extension and a new landside store. The retailer, which has been the sole duty-free operator at Hamilton since 1996, will run the store alongside its combined arrivals and departures store once a major terminal renovation is completed in August 2007.

The airport's proximity to Auckland and increased trans-Tasman traffic have resulted in strong growth at the airport, said Duty Free Stores operations and marketing manager Grant Archibald. "We have tremendous confidence in the future of Hamilton airport as it completes major terminal expansions and we look forward to working inside the new terminal building," he said. "The Hamilton outlet is a significant part of our network within New Zealand and we expect that to continue, given its proximity to Auckland and the predicted growth in passenger numbers."

Hamilton International Airport business development manager Rosemary Poole added that the airport was keen to continue its partnership with Duty Free Stores. "We were very willing to extend the current lease so they could be part of our expansion plans," said Poole. "It's exciting for us that Duty Free Stores is now going to be able to enlarge its operation here and offer our travellers a wider product range."
