The retailer is set to expand its operation at the regional New Zealand airport after securing a nine-year extension

Dunedin International airport has extended its contract with Duty Free Stores New Zealand, which will operate retail at the regional airport for a further nine years. The operator, which has been the sole duty-free retailer at Dunedin since 1997, will move into expanded premises when Dunedin unveils its redeveloped terminal building in June.

Duty Free Stores New Zealand will open two new airside stores, one each in the arrivals and departures areas, and operations and marketing manager Grant Archibald said that he was confident sales would continue to grow. Sales have been increasing every month at the location since last October, when the retailer opened a new landside store and a Try Otago gift shop focusing on regional products.

"Dunedin's and Otago's tourism profiles have been growing rapidly and the airport has good trans-Tasman air links so there has been good growth in passenger numbers," said Archibald. "Our sales have been increasing every month and local products are proving to be particularly popular."

Dunedin business development manager Peter Ford praised the quality of the fit-out of Duty Free Stores New Zealand's stores. "We've had a long relationship and we are more than happy to continue their presence in our terminal," said Ford. "The retail outlets are built to an exceptional standard."

The news follows another contract extension for Duty Free Stores New Zealand, also for nine years, at Hamilton International airport last month.
