Duty Free Stores New Zealand is the prime beneficiary of a fourfold increase in retail space at the airport

Dunedin International airport has opened its new international arrivals and departures area, featuring four times more space for duty-free retail than in the old area. The 4,000sq m (43,040sq ft) terminal houses two new walkthrough duty-free stores, one each in the arrivals and departures areas, which passengers must pass on their way to the gates or baggage reclaim.

Duty Free Stores New Zealand recently extended its exclusive duty-free contract at Dunedin for nine years (RavenFox.com March 27), and operations and marketing manager Grant Archibald said that he expected sales – which have climbed steadily since last October – to continue to grow. Dunedin CEO John McCall said the new area, stage three of a big redevelopment at the airport, was an "exciting step forward".

Commenting on the new outlets, McCall said: "They will be significant stores and a big improvement on what we've had before in terms of convenience, customer friendliness and a hugely expanded product range."

McCall said that the new area, which also features new Customs, immigration and security areas as well as passenger lounges and baggage reclaim, would be operating smoothly by late June. The terminal's official opening is planned for October.
