The airside retail area at Dublin airport is set to expand in a €50m development

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has applied for permission to extend Dublin airport terminal one. The plans detail an extra 7,500sq m (80,700sq ft) of space for retail and check-in desks. If the airport is granted planning permission, the first elements of the new extension could be complete by autumn 2008.

DAA CEO Declan Collier said: “This €50m ($66.6m) investment in terminal one is one of several projects we are working on to radically improve the customer experience for all passengers using Dublin airport. Over the next five years we will be investing about €450m ($600m) in projects in T1. This includes the T1 extension, the construction of pier D [and a] large number of internal refurbishments and upgrades.”

Beyond security, the plans include a large circulation area for passengers en route to piers A and D. The enhanced airside retail and food and beverage offer will be accessible from the pier A end of the existing retail area, which will be replaced by a new café-style outlet. More than 12m passengers are expected to use piers A and D in 2008, a 40% increase on current passenger volumes in this area.

The extension to T1 has been designed by a consortium headed by ADPi, a subsidiary of Aéroports de Paris. The extension is part of a €2bn ($2.6bn) development programme to upgrade Dublin airport over the next 10 years. The plan also includes the construction of T2 and the provision of a new runway.
