Dublin appoints construction partners for new terminal

Dublin Airport Authority has announced the winners of the construction tenders for the airport's €1.2bn ($1.43bn) expansion programme
Dublin Airport Authority (DAA)--formerly Aer Rianta--has named the companies that will oversee the construction of Dublin airport's new terminal two and connected piers. The €1.2bn ($1.43bn) project is set for completion by late 2009 and will have the capacity to handle 15m passengers annually.
Following a public tender UK builder Laing O'Rourke has been selected to build the new development's 15,000sq m (161,400sq ft), two-storey pier D. A consortium comprising Ové Arup, Pascall & Watson and Mace has been named project manager and designer of T2, pier E and works to link the facilities with Dublin's existing T1. Meanwhile DAA has appointed Turner & Townsend to plan the integration and delivery of the new facilities.
The construction of Dublin T2 was approved by the Irish government last year (RavenFox.com May 19).
Last year retail operator and Dublin incumbent Aer Rianta Retail director Frank O'Connell told DFNI that the commercial focus in the new Pier D would be on "last-minute retail, confectionery, tobacco, news and basic catering" (DFNI November 1). He added: "We will probably keep the critical mass of retailing in one central area. The challenge will be what to do when we create pier E and the new terminal. Do we maintain a single commercial area or do we create a second area? These are key questions and in the next few months we'll agree the principles on which these will work."
