Dubai Duty sales up 12% in first quarter

Growth posted in first quarter of operations at newly-opened concourse at Dubai International airport

Dubai Duty Ffree beauty store at Dubai International airport terminal three's concourse ATravel retailer Dubai Duty Free has reported sales growth of 12% to $438m in the first quarter of 2013 compared with the previous corresponding period. The sales growth covers the first quarter following the opening of terminal three’s concourse A, after which the retailer’s retail space at Dubai International airport grew from 18,000sq m to 26,000sq m.

Sales in the Emirates-owned terminal grew by 19% and accounted for 61% of total turnover in the first quarter. Average spend per passenger in terminal one, which accounts for 31% of sales, is higher, and sales in terminal two grew year-on-year by 22% in the first quarter of this year.

Liquor, perfume and gold remain the top three product categories in the quarter. Significant sales increases were evident in many categories. Perfumes rose by 16% to $67m and confectionery sales also rose by 16% to $36m. Sales of electronics grew 12% to $$33m, while sales of cosmetics rose 13% to $30m and watches by 23% to reach $27m.

Dubai Duty Free executive vice-chairman Colm McLoughlin said: “We have had a very good start to the year and no doubt the opening of Concourse A has contributed towards this. The new facility has been extremely well received by passengers and it has enabled us to introduce a number of firsts, including a retail offer in the Emirates first-class lounge in concourse A, which is doing very well. We have also been able to extend our existing product range and introduce some new brands, some of which are unique in the region.”
